2016 Grandparents' Day!!!

Last Wednesday was a special day for all of Breck School. A tradition that has long been held near and dear to the hearts of many faculty, students, parents, grandparents and special guests ... Grandparents's Day!!

The kids and I so enjoyed having all of our wonderful guests in Room 16 and hope they had as good of a time as we did! From planting corn seeds, to decorating frames, to creating a pinecone turkey and everything in between - THANK YOU for making it so fun and special!

Check out the pictures below (my apologies if I didn't get all combinations of guests per child).

Learning Update

Reading: We are continuing to learn about story elements. Your second grader is learning how to identify character attributes and personality traits, as well as find evidence from their stories to support their thinking. This will help enhance their comprehension and make them stronger readers.

Writing: In Room 16, we are working on rereading stories through detective eyes. I've encouraged writers to make sure their writing makes sense and sounds right, specifically through strategies that show how to attend to punctuation. Writers have been taught how to check so their sentences don't run on and on with a series of ands.

Math: We began 'Chapter 3: Subtraction up to 1,000.' Our most recent lessons have challenged students to subtract with regrouping in ones and tens. This can be a tough concept to learn, but they are doing well. It is extremely important for them to continue to use the base 10 manipulatives, as well as the place value charts, available in our room. By using these tools, kids see can how subtraction problems break down visually and have the power to make sense that much quicker and easier!

Science: The past week, science and math collided and we learned a lot about pumpkins! We will continue to learn about pumpkins and look forward to planting pumpkin seeds this week.

Halloween 2016

We had a blast celebrating Halloween on Monday! The parade, sing-a-long and class party got the week started on an fun and exciting note. Our party consisted of cookie decorating, Halloween card making, Spooky BINGO and Roll-A-Monster game. It was a success! I hope you all had a great holiday, too!

A Note from Chaplain Zosel

Students are invited to bring in photographs of beloved people in their lives who have died during the past year.  We have an 'ofrenda' (Spanish for 'offering') on a large table in the hall outside the chapel. Students may bring labeled photos to school, then deliver to Chaplain Zosel or place them directly on the table. They will be displayed through Nov. 23, and returned to students by Nov. 30.

Our theme for Grandparents Day is 'Salve! May You Be Well!' Students are encouraged to call or email their Grandparents Day guests and ask them "What does being well mean to you?"  If students would like a response to be included in the Grandparents Day Chapel they can send the response to nan.zosel@breckschool.org by Nov. 16.

Thank you for all of the generous contributions to "Breck Scares Hunger!" We are still weighing and tallying, but we are hoping to meet our goal of 14,000 pounds!
